Who uses POOL MAGIC?
Why POOL MAGIC?
Pool owners are looking for cost-effective and efficient alternatives to treat their pool water. This is because many are constantly plagued with pools going green after rain, black algae, skin irritations and a host of other problems. Treating a pool according to manufacturer's specifications can be rather costly. In addition, if these specifications are not closely followed the pool can become unhealthy. Algae can be easily seen but bacteria are invisible and can be dangerous.
POOL MAGIC will largely replace chlorine and will sanitise the pool water with one easy treatment every 4 weeks. POOL MAGIC was developed as an easy ready-to-use mixture that will save you time and money.
Wouldn't it be great if you could enjoy your pool or spa without those big doses of chorine? Well now you can, thanks to POOL MAGIC: a safe yet powerful water purification system that reduces chlorine levels by over 70% and is guaranteed to eliminate any type of algae. This technological wonder keeps your pool water absolutely pure and sparkling clean without those big doses of chlorine, any additional costly installation and time consuming maintenance.
One sachet of POOL MAGIC into the weir followed by one cup of chlorine (into the weir) seven days later will give you the following benefits:
- A significant saving on pool chemical costs
- Pool maintenance that is far less labour intensive
- Crystal clear pool water free of any forms of algae and bacteria
- No irritation of skin and eyes (in fact swimming in POOL MAGIC treated water is comperable to swimming in a mountain stream)
- No sinus problems (have you ever noticed how, irrespective of the weather, children always have runny noses when they swim? That is primarily caused by chlorine)
- Totally environmentally friendly pool water (It can be backwashed straight onto the lawn)
- No problems like 'chlorine lock' (a problem caused by stabilised chlorine)
- No green discolouration of pool water after rain
- No more problems with black algae and constant water imbalance
What is POOL MAGIC?
POOL MAGIC is a mixture of minerals which in their ionised form attack the algae, bacteria and viruses in the pool for an extended period of time without the need for daily dosing - even if new bugs enter the pool daily. POOL MAGIC need only be replaced once a month. This is because POOL MAGIC, when dissolved in the water, forms a stable residue which, unlike chlorine, is not dissipated by sunlight or heat. POOL MAGIC also contains chemicals (flocculants) that attract very fine dust and debris, depositing it in the filter for later removal by backwashing. The final ingredient is a chelate which holds the POOL MAGIC in suspension in the water to prevent it from causing stains on the pool surface. Because POOL MAGIC is environmentally and people friendly, you can dose it while people are swimming! Mechanical damage to the pool surface is no longer a concern because POOL MAGIC does not affect your water balance at all and is neither caustic nor acidic. Treated pool water stays crystal clear and healthy. Pool owners in many parts of the world are presently benefiting from the substantial savings in time, effort and money resulting from the use of POOL MAGIC. At the same time, the effectiveness of the system has proved to be immensely popular with private as well as public pool owners, schools, clubs, holiday resorts, hotels, gymnasiums and pool maintenance companies - hence the name POOL MAGIC!
How does it work?
You do not need to install any machines or fancy gadgets to start a pool on POOL MAGIC. The product is simply added to the skimmer of the pool. It then forms a deposit in the sand filter from where it releases copper as well as a stain-preventing EDTA salt into the water. There is no pipe cutting or electrical wiring required, and the minerals dissolve quickly to begin fighting algae.
Algae growth is stimulated by sunlight, nitrogenous materials, carbon dioxide, poor filtration and water temperatures. A pool can be "taken over" by algae in as little as 12 hours and become green and cloudy. The filtering system may become clogged, slowing water circulation thus compounding the problem.
There are 3 main types of pool algae. Some discolour the water, others cling to the sides and bottom forming dark coloured spots. It is much easier and cheaper to prevent this with POOL MAGIC than to cure it with costly chemicals, traditional algaecides and overdoses of chlorine.
Preventing algae from growing requires only POOL MAGIC and a proper programme of regular pool maintenance.
This means.....
- keeping the pH at a level between 7,2 and 7,4
- a "free chlorine residual" at a minimum of 0,5ppm, and
- ensuring that your monthly dosing of POOL MAGIC is correct and not overlooked.
Since most algae growth is resistant to chlorine, POOL MAGIC provides a 3 prong attack in the pool environment. Instead of simply killing off resulting algae, POOL MAGIC attacks the root of the problem by stopping the algae growth cycle in its tracks. In the meantime, the copper goes to work on the algae itself, eliminating cells and cutting off oxygen production. For as long as the POOL MAGIC dosage remains at the required levels, the algae growth is at a standstill and you have a clean and naturally healthy pool. Since chlorine no longer has a primary role to play, demand is drastically reduced, and a significantly smaller dosage is needed to kill the remaining bacteria and oxidise the organic material in the water.
POOL MAGIC does not "burn" the algae and bacteria, it simply makes the water unhealthy for them, but healthy for humans. The end result is a completely healthy pool with sparkling clear water that is free of the unwanted elements that cause maintenance problems.
Does POOL MAGIC kill black algae?
It does not just kill black algae, it permanently controls it. However, this can take up to 8 weeks after the start of the POOL MAGIC treatment programme. To speed up this process, you are advised to brush affected areas every 2 to 3 days just to scratch the surface of the algae.
How do I use POOL MAGIC?
Once the water balance has been corrected and the filter backwashed, place the multi port valve on 'Filter' and pour one sachet of POOL MAGIC per 70 000 litres of pool water into the skimmer whilst the pump is running. If it sounds as if the pump is straining slightly, set the multi-port valve on 'Backwash' and switch the pump on for 5 seconds to allow the POOL MAGIC to settle in the sand. Rest on 'Filter' and switch the pump on again.
In summer pour one cup of granular chlorine into the skimmer (never straight into the pool) once per week to ensure proper sanitation and oxidization of organic materials. In winter chlorine usage can be decreased to 25-50% of the summer levels. Alternatively use oxidizers on a weekly basis. Never mix oxidizers with chlorine!
This treatment should last at least four weeks. You may find that you can stretch the time between dosages of POOL MAGIC by floating one stabilized chlorine pill every two weeks. POOL MAGIC levels in the pool are mainly diminished through absorption by algae and fungi in the pool. When pool water starts losing its clarity or starts becoming slightly green (after four weeks), this is normally a good indication that the next dose is necessary.
Is POOL MAGIC safe?
Most pools treated with chlorine according to the manufacturers specifications, exceed or come close to the toxic levels set out by the World Health Organisation (W.H.O.) In a pool treated with POOL MAGIC, these levels fall well below the standard set by the WHO. So, POOL MAGIC, actually helps you maintain a healthier, safer pool.
Under normal circumstances with the use of POOL MAGIC the copper concentration in the pool water remains well below levels that are considered to be problematic. The human skin does not absorb copper easily and you could happily spend 8 hours a day, seven days a week in the pool and still have a deficiency of copper in your body. Almost every ingredient in POOL MAGIC can be found on the label of any good over the counter multi-vitamin/mineral preparation. Pharmaceutical companies world-wide manufacture products containing copper and because a deficiency of these essential minerals in the body can lead to serious health problems.
Copper is an essential mineral for life but in higher doses can be detrimental to your health. In man, copper is involved in building body tissues such as proteins, blood vessels, nerves and enzymes (Faelten, 1981). Copper is known to have very positive results in the treatment of ailments such as arthritis. Only 5 - 10% of the copper ingested is absorbed. The National Research Council (NRC) recommends 2mg copper intake per day. Copper can be added to drinking water at 2 - 3 mg/litre to prevent deficiencies (Farmer et al, 1982).
If 400g of POOL MAGIC is dissolved in 70 000litres of water, you will have to drink 10 litres of treated pool water per day to meet the NRC's daily dietary recommendations.
POOL MAGIC treated water is 10 times weaker than copper treated drinking water recommended by Farmer!
POOL MAGIC is safe for children as any consumption of the product is highly unlikely due to the fact that it is extremely unpalatable. If the product was consumed, such consumption would have to be substantial to have any negative impact.
POOL MAGIC can also be safely stored without the worry of causing explosions or other damage when stored near other chemicals.
Is there not a build up of metal in the water?
If you backwash every seven to fourteen days, as you should, the constant replacement of water will prevent any build-up to the point where it may affect the effective maintenance of the pool.
Will POOL MAGIC stain the pool?
If you maintain a proper water balance as you should with any other Algaecide and/or Bacteriocide (including chlorine), stains will not occur. The chemical engineering of POOL MAGIC has provided certain built-in hedges against staining and stains are highly unlikely. It is also important to note that these stains do not cause mechanical damage and are simply the result of copper attaching itself chemically to the walls of the pool. Should such stains ever occur, they can easily be removed by adding a little acid to the pool to lower the pH to below 6,8 for a period of 2 to 3 weeks. By simply correcting the water balance in most instances the stains will disappear after a few days - without special treatment. A chemical stain removal can also be performed in instances where the pool has been neglected and has been stained as a result. However, such stains will not occur if the pH is kept constant between 7,0 and 7,4.
In the same way a car will break down if not properly maintained, it is possible for POOL MAGIC to contribute to a light blue or grey to black stain on your pool surface. If we understand why stains happen, we can easily prevent them. Another name for staining is Total Dissolved Solids Dropout (TDS Dropout). To explain the process of TDS-Dropout in the simplest terms: Certain conditions in the water cause the water to gradually lose its capacity to retain or 'hold onto' specific elements present in solution in the water. These elements will tend to 'drop out'/sediment out of the water. They then land on the surface of the pool where they chemically attach themselves to the surface (almost in the way that fine metal shards would attach themselves to a large magnet). They become visible as stains because of their concentrated form. Metals are heavier than salts and would therefore be more prone to dropping out and causing stains than for instance salt, or calcium. Severe overdosing and/or very poor water balance are the main contributing factors to staining. If the pH of the pool runs at 8,6 or higher for a period of weeks, a light stain may develop, especially with marbelite pools.
If chlorine is thrown directly into the pool and lies undiluted and highly concentrated on the pool floor, the copper in POOL MAGIC will show the damage to the pool floor caused by the chlorine as a dark grey to black stain. If quickly attended to, these stains are easy to remove by using a pool stain remover.
Do I have to change or treat or install anything before starting with POOL MAGIC?
No. Simply ensure that you apply generally prescribed water balance levels. The only slight difference could be that you run a slightly lower pH factor than specified for chlorine i.e. 6,8 to 7,2. (Incidentally chlorine also works better with a lower pH than the recommended 7,2 to 7,6). Alternatively, if you do not like chlorine, there are other oxidizers that can be used to achieve a completely chlorine free pool.
Can I backwash onto a lawn?
Yes. POOL MAGIC is completely environmentally friendly and is totally harmless to plants and animals. Caution should, however, be taken when other chemicals have recently been added to the pool, or if the water balance has not been recently corrected.
Do I still need to use chlorine?
No. Not if you opt for one of the other oxidizers available on the market. If you do however prefer to use chlorine you can. A little chlorine will ensure that proper sanitation levels are maintained and that the build up of organics in the water is controlled. One cup per week in 50 000 litres should be sufficient in summer. Alternatively one stabilized chlorine pill (in a floating basket) once per two to three weeks will also be sufficient. In winter this dosage can be halved. Remember to always pour granular chlorine into the weir of the pool with the multi-port valve set on 'Filter' and the pump running. This will ensure proper sanitation of your filter and prevent the chlorine staining or causing mechanical damage to your pool. This happens when it lies in a concentrated, un-dissolved state in direct contact with your pool surface.
Do I still have to use acid?
Yes. Acid is not used to control algae but is added to the water to maintain the water balance (pH). The pool surface has a constant influence on water balance/pH and acid or soda ash is used to cancel out these effects. You will however use less acid because you are no longer using large quantities of chlorine which also effects the water balance.
If I switch to POOL MAGIC, what are the implications to my pool maintenance programme?
With POOL MAGIC you will not need to dose the pool as often or spend as much time on the pool as is the case with conventional chemicals. You need to check pH and Total Alkalinity once every seven to fourteen days and do a proper backwash and rinse once a week. If the pool is being used very regularly you may require some oxidizer once every seven to fourteen days to ensure that there is no build-up of organics in the water. This is also necessary to ensure the efficacy of POOL MAGIC.
